Kuching Eating Holiday - Day 4

The Quest for Food in Kuching, Sarawak

27 October 2008 - Day 4

The plan was to have Sarawak Laksa and then Kolo Mee (at the man with an attitude's place) .. But alas, that was not to be for this place was not opened for business today ! Apparently Anthony Bourdain came here to try out the laksa, well, he came, but we didn't !

Next stop, Kolo Mee at Min Joo Cafe (corner of Bishop Street & Carpenter Street)

This place is famous because ..... you have to wait and wait and you must not even utter a single word of displeasure if not, you will be told off !!

And we still want to go there ?!!

Hahaha! Yup ! I have heard about this place and also read about it in other peoples' blogs so I MUST give it a try, after all, I'm prepared !!

Here's what happens.

1) You find a seat and then wait.

2) Then a man (chef's son) takes your order and then promptly comes with the utensils.

After that you just have to wait.

3) When the 'drinks' lady sees the utensils on your table, she will then take your orders for drinks.

4) Not too long after drinks are served, your meal will arrive !

All in all we only waited about 45 minutes. That's not too bad as it was not the peak hour. The Noodles and the Pig's Innards soup were good and definitely worth the wait ! Maybe the trick is to go there early before the crowd comes and before their attitudes change !?

Kuching Eating Holiday - Day 3

The Quest for Food in Kuching, Sarawak

26 October 2008 - Day 3

Went to the Sarawak Cultural Village this morning. Good weather for the first part, then the sun came out and we were practically dripping in sweat by the time we reached the auditorium for the cultural show. On the way back to the city we saw some Orang Aslis selling this vegetable (Bidin) by the road side, we would be having this for dinner tonight !

On the way to lunch we stopped by at Satok Market. Its a Pasar Tani type of market and it only opens from Saturday to Sunday. Saw some Ikan Terubok and some very interesting chillies (that looked like Jambu Air).

Bought some chillies home to try and they are really super hot !

This is where we had our lunch. Tried something new today, Belacan Mee Hoon ! It doesn't taste as bad as it looks or as bad as they were meant to be ! In fact the taste was good and even better with chilli.

That night, we had dinner at See Good Food Centre.

The yellow vegetables are actually brinjals and they give off a sour taste to the sauce. This dish is very nice and the sauce tastes really good and refreshing too.

Kuching Eating Holiday - Day 2

The Quest for Food in Kuching, Sarawak

25 October 2008 - Day 2

We couldn't go to the Sarawak Cultural Village today as there was a parade in the city and there was a traffic jam caused by traffic diversions. Not wanting to waste any time, we went for breakfast instead. Had Sarawak Laksa & Mee Jawa at this cafe just about 10 minutes walk from the hotel.

After breakfast we took a walk around the city centre and the waterfront and ... along the way the strong aroma or durians led us to ..... THIS !!

Kuching Eating Holiday - Day 1

The Quest for Food in Kuching, Sarawak

24 October 2008 - Day 1

With the long weekend ahead, we headed over to Kuching, Sarawak for an eating holiday ! We have heard a lot about Sarawak Laksa, Kolo Mee, Tomato Mee, ..... so, why not give it a try ! We left for Kuching on a Friday evening and once we touched down, we headed over to this place called Big Potato for its Kolo Mee and Tomato Mee.

According to some, this is where the 3 Layer Teh C Peng was 'born' !!

After eating at Big Potato, we headed over to this 'Medan Selera' opposite Elektra House. Here, we sampled more Kolo Mee and some other foodstuff !
